This product, created by FAW TRUCKS engineering and technical personnel over seven years, is positioned as a world-class high-end heavy truck. Reporters recently interviewed the R&D team of FAW TRUCKS J7, who explained in detail the story behind the birth of this product from four aspects: research and development, manufacturing, supply chain, and intelligence.

This is a product that has been meticulously developed over seven years. From the spy photos circulating online a few years ago, to nationwide long-term road tests, to small-scale trials, and finally the recent official launch, every move of FAW TRUCKS J7 has attracted great attention from the industry and end-users.
So, is FAW TRUCKS J7 an upgraded version of the previous model or an entirely new model? On the second day after the launch of FAW TRUCKS J7, the R&D design team of FAW TRUCKS J7 shared with the journalists the story behind the creation of this product.
"FAW TRUCKS J7 is a product that meets the rapid development and high-end market demands of the logistics industry. We have positioned it as a world-class heavy-duty truck." Gu Jingzhe, Senior Director of the Medium-Duty Vehicle Development Department at FAW TRUCKS Commercial Vehicle Development Institute, clearly defined the positioning of FAW TRUCKS J7.
It is reported that FAW TRUCKS J7 was initiated in 2011. At that time, imported trucks dominated the high-end logistics transportation industry in China, and high-end logistics users had a high level of brand loyalty. If FAW TRUCKS J7 were merely an upgrade of an existing product, it would not have strong competitiveness in the market.
Know yourself, know your enemy, and you shall not be defeated in a hundred battles. If we are to create a world-class heavy-duty truck, we must have a comprehensive understanding of similar products. The domestic road logistics market has similarities to Europe, where high-end logistics companies often choose European truck brands. Therefore, at the beginning of the FAW TRUCKS J7 project, the R&D design team of FAW TRUCKS conducted a comprehensive investigation of mainstream truck products in the European market.
"We abandoned the original product development system and, after comparing it with similar foreign products, emphasized the use of European standards and perspectives to evaluate our product," said Gu Jingzhe. The development team of FAW TRUCKS J7 conducted comprehensive performance and structural design investigations on the latest European mainstream models at the time. The purpose of this approach was to identify gaps. As Gu Jingzhe put it, only by knowing what constitutes high-end and high-quality can we design high-end products. This benchmarking work allowed the R&D design team of FAW TRUCKS J7 to gain a deeper understanding of how to design a future high-end heavy-duty truck that belongs to China.
A towering skyscraper starts from level ground, and building FAW TRUCKS J7 as this "skyscraper" also requires a solid foundation, which is a new product development process. Gu Jingzhe explained that in the initial benchmarking of similar products, the benchmarking of performance and major components was only a small part. More importantly, they gradually understood and mastered the product development process of European high-end heavy-duty trucks, including cost estimation and control standards for every tiny component.
"We have set the B10 life of major components in FAW TRUCKS J7 to 1.5 million kilometers, which is a significant improvement compared to the existing product's B10 life of 800,000 kilometers. It also provides a solid foundation for the application of intelligent connectivity functions," said Gu Jingzhe. With a clear product development strategy and definition, the next step is to coordinate the development, production, supply chain, and quality control processes, optimizing the design to achieve the established goals.
The new product development concept is disruptive. It requires sufficient strength in every aspect of the development process to ensure smooth project progression. During the development process, FAW TRUCKS J7 has adopted various new materials and techniques, with the sole purpose of creating a high-quality and highly reliable new product. According to the design team of FAW TRUCKS J7, thanks to the new product development concept and process, FAW TRUCKS J7 has gradually grown from a small prototype into a fully-fledged product.
In November of last year, FAW TRUCKS J7 underwent a long-distance test drive covering a total mileage of 25,000 kilometers, spanning the major highways of the national logistics network. According to the test results, FAW TRUCKS J7 had a lighter curb weight compared to similar European products and demonstrated overall performance on par with mainstream European models, and in some aspects, even surpassed the performance of European products.
From being a "money-making machine" to a "mobile home"
"FAW TRUCKS J7 is our first product developed with performance as the main design focus. We have categorized performance characteristics and aim to address pain points, provide desired features, and bring surprises to users," said Guo Ping, Senior Director of the Testing Department at FAW TRUCKS Commercial Vehicle Development Institute. This capable woman is responsible for the overall vehicle performance development of FAW TRUCKS J7.
In her opinion, FAW TRUCKS J7 should not only be a "money-making machine" but also become a driver's 24-hour mobile home. It is necessary to explain the performance categorization mentioned by Guo Ping. Pain points refer to hard indicators such as reliability, durability, total cost of ownership (TCO), safety, and environmental friendliness. If these goals cannot be achieved, the vehicle cannot be launched and sold. Desired features refer to the functions and performance that users have long been expecting. And surprises refer to the thoughtful designs prepared by the FAW TRUCKS J7 development team for users.
There is no doubt that trucks are tools for production. For a considerable period of time, the expectations of domestic users for trucks were that they should have few issues, be fuel-efficient, and capable of carrying heavy loads, helping them prosper. With the rapid development of domestic road logistics and the increasing number of young people joining the logistics industry, terminal users now have various needs and expectations for trucks.
From being a "money-making machine" to a "mobile home," this transformation is not easy. In the early days, many domestic heavy-duty trucks were developed based on Japanese models, which had good practicality but lacked comfort. Later, European-style heavy-duty trucks became the reference for domestic commercial vehicle companies, but their design in terms of ergonomics did not align well with the needs of the domestic user base.
How to resolve the aforementioned contradictions? The FAW TRUCKS J7 design team was determined to develop a driver's cabin suitable for domestic drivers. For this purpose, they collaborated with Jilin University and the China National Institute of Standardization to conduct nationwide sampling over a period of three years, constructing a Chinese driver-human database, which served as the design foundation for FAW TRUCKS J7 and future models.
Perhaps from a few cases in the development process, we can observe the meticulousness of the FAW TRUCKS J7 development team.
Drivers who have driven domestic heavy-duty trucks may have had the same feeling that the shifting operation of many domestic trucks is not smooth. In order to solve this problem, the R&D team of FAW TRUCKS J7 went through seven or eight rounds of design just for the selection of the shift lever position. They created white models and tested them with drivers of different body types to choose the best layout for the shift lever. Another example is the design of the wrap-around instrument panel in FAW TRUCKS J7. They optimized the frequency of operation and the placement of various functions multiple times so that the driver can operate the commonly used functions without leaving the seatback.
Guo Ping said that they have given full consideration to every detail of the cabin design. For example, they have defined the backlight and interior lighting colors and the illumination in different scenarios with meticulous care, aiming to make FAW TRUCKS J7 drivers feel at home.
With a meticulous attitude towards design, the R&D team fully communicates with core users. It is with this development philosophy that they can truly create a "24-hour home" for users.
